Public Health Update: The Ebola Virus
Kean University Health Services has an important public health announcement regarding the Ebola Virus outbreak in West Africa. As a result of the Ebola Disease [EVD], the New Jersey Department of Health’s Office of the State Epidemiologist has asked that Kean University share this Interim Guidance with our campus community.
Currently, there are no known cases of Ebola in the United States. The Ebola virus is not airborne like the common cold or influenza and is only contagious when someone has symptoms. Not highly contagious, the virus is only spread if an individual has had direct contact with the body fluids of someone who has the virus or animals that carry the virus.
While the number of Kean students and faculty/staff from the impacted countries of Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, or Nigeria is negligible, we realize that as members of our global community, there may be students, faculty and staff who may have recently traveled to, or are arriving from, the impacted countries.
The New Jersey Department of Health requests that all students, faculty and staff who have traveled to these countries come to Health Services immediately for evaluation. If you have been in these countries within the last 21 days, please contact the Kean Health Services as soon possible. If Health Services is closed, visit the nearest Emergency Department if signs and symptoms are apparent.
If you have any further questions or concerns, please contact Health Services at 908.737.4880. Our business hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and we are located in Downs Hall, Room 126.
